For many, Ina Garten’s name has become synonymous with a luxuriously easy and delicious lifestyle.

Ina Garten has imparted culinary wisdom from her Westhampton, New York-located kitchen and garden for decades — first with a specialty food store, then via critically-acclaimed cookbooks, and, since 2002, with her Food Network show, Barefoot Contessa.

For many, Garten’s name has become synonymous with a luxuriously easy and delicious lifestyle. Consistently cheerful, the chef never seems to break a sweat and always appears to enjoy every minute she spends cooking and prepping for her guests. She presents an aspirational existence that many acknowledge they long to embody (including 30 Rock’s Liz Lemon, not once but twice), and this influence extends well beyond the best way to plate crudités. When you think about it, Ina Garten gives her readers life advice of the best kind in the best possible way: tidbits of instruction on how to revel in the best life has to offer, delivered without judgment and often accompanying a glass of wine.

We love the life Garten encourages us to lead so much, we’ve sussed out some of the very best slivers of wisdom she’s imparted over the years, and made a series of inspirational posters to get you through your day. So, grab a cold glass of chilled Sancerre Rouge, a couple pieces of bruschetta, and let Ina’s life lessons wash over you.

Be the fun you wish to see in the world.

We hear the same thing goes for éclairs.

The Wisdom of Ina Garten

An article this week in The New York Times makes me understand why I don’t hate Ina Garten, Food Network star and author of the Barefoot Contessa cookbook series.

“Bright-eyed and apple-cheeked,” Garten is enjoying unexpected success in the second half of her life. After 20 years of running a gourmet shop in the Hamptons (named for the Humphrey Bogart/Ava Gardner film The Barefoot Contessa), she sold the store and invested her own money in a cookbook, never expecting it to take off as it has. Now approaching 60, she has five cookbooks, a top-rated show on the Food Network, and a line of prepared foods.

But here’s the great part—Garten has rejected opportunities to expand even more. “She has turned down offers to start magazines or to be host for more TV shows. She has declined to endorse other food products beyond her own line and has rejected opening a chain of food shops.” Garten wants to preserve her quality of life, despite success. “There is a balance between having a life and having a business,” the article quotes her as saying.

The Barefoot Contessa Cookbook

The acclaimed specialty food store, Barefoot Contessa, has been cooking and baking extraordinary dishes for enthusiastic customers in the Hamptons for more than twenty years. People have been trying to get the exuberant owner, Ina Garten, to share her store's secrets for many of those years. Finally, in The Barefoot Contessa Cookbook, you can see the energy and style that make Barefoot Contessa such a special place, with dozens of recipes and over 160 amazing photographs. The most popular recipes from Ina use familiar ingredients, but they taste even better than you might expect. With slowly car-amellized onions and fresh sour cream, her Pan-Fried Onion Dip is the real thing. To intensify the flavors, tomato soup is made from oven-roasted tomatoes and fresh basil. Meat loaf is as good as your grandmother's, but it's healthier because it's made from fresh herbs and ground turkey. Baked with rolled oats, whole wheat, and real maple syrup, the light and flaky Maple-Oatmeal Scones. Now you can prepare these and other famous Barefoot Contessa recipes at home Ina says she often spent a week preparing dinner for six friends before she owned a specialty food store. Her Barefoot Contessa experience gave her hundreds of ideas in a couple of hours to create wonderful parties. And in this book they're all. Rémoulade Sauce Crab Cakes can be stored in the refrigerator overnight and sautéed just before the guests arrive. For a delicious autumn lunch, Cheddar Corn Chowder can be made days ahead, heated and served with a salad and bread. It is possible to prepare the ingredients for Grilled Salmon Salad before serving and to toss them together. The Raspberry Corn Muffins batter can be mixed a day before and sprung into the oven just before breakfast. With style, simplicity, and a relaxed sense of fun, Ina Garten teaches us how to entertain. Throughout the book there are notes for cocktail parties, lunches and dinner parties where all is done before the guests arrive. And there are easy instructions to create beautiful party dishes that don't even require you to cook! You have the perfect recipe for hosting parties with Ina Garten and The Barefoot Contessa Cookbook, which is easy and fun for everyone--including the cook. . Read More

10 Things You Didn't Know About Ina Garten's Husband Jeffrey

The Barefoot Contessa Ina Garten is one of the most celebrated personalities in food today. These days, she’s just as well-known for her foolproof recipes as she is for cooking for her number one fan, Jeffrey Garten, her husband of nearly 50 years. Now that her highly-anticipated 10th cookbook, Cooking For Jeffrey (out in October)is devoted entirely to the dishes she makes for him, it’s time to get up to speed on the man himself!

Here are 10 things you might not have known about Jeffrey Garten:

1. He met Ina when she was 15. She was visiting her older brother at Dartmouth and Jeffrey was a student there at the time. She even spoiled him back then: “When I was 16 and Jeffrey was 18, I used to make him brownies and send them in a big box to school. I think he was the most popular guy in the dorm when they arrived,” she said during an episode about their 40th wedding anniversary meal. The couple married in 1968—when she was 20 and he was 22.

2. He’s a veteran. Jeffrey served in the military for four years, from 1968 to 1972, according to his faculty page at Yale. (It runs in the family: Jeffrey’s father, Mel Garten, who died at 93 in May 2015, was a decorated soldier with 30-year military career. According to his obituary in the Village Voice, he earned the Distinguished Service Cross, three Silver Stars, four Bronze Stars, five Purple Hearts, the Legion of Merit, two Joint Commendation Medals, and two Air Medals. He also lost a leg in Vietnam in 1966.)

3. He’s been a part of four presidential administrations. According to a story in Johns Hopkins Magazine (he has his Masters and a PhD from the school), Jeffrey worked in the Nixon, Ford, Carter and Clinton administrations. Ina also worked with the Washington, D.C. elite after majoring in economics at Syracuse and getting her MBA at George Washington University. She writes on her website, “In 1978, I was working in the White House Office of Management and Budget and thinking I’ve got to do something more creative.”

4. He worked on Wall Street. For 13 years, he worked at Lehman Brothers eventually became a managing director focusing on debt restructuring in Latin America and expanding investments in Asia, according to Johns Hopkins Magazine.

5. He’s an esteemed professor at Yale. After his time on Wall Street and in Washington, he became dean of the Yale School of Management from 1995 to 2005. He’s currently the Dean Emeritus, and teaches six courses, according to his faculty page.

6. He’s written five books on the global economy. His first was published in 1992, called A Cold Peace: America, Japan, Germany, and the Struggle for Supremacy. His latest, From Silk to Silicon, was published in March 2016.

7. He’s the one who encouraged Ina to get into the food business. Ina was discouraged by her work in D.C., and told CBS Sunday Morning that she lamented to Jeffrey that she needed a change. “I have to do something different,” she said. “Nuclear energy policy’s not me.” So when she saw an ad in the classifieds about a shop for sale in the Hamptons, Jeffrey was down to check it out. “I felt very bad for Ina, and I said, let’s go look at it,” he told CBS. Ina ended up buying the shop, called the Barefoot Contessa, and ran it for 18 years. “Jeffrey just said, if you love doing it, do it,” she said. She’s still grateful for his business insight, telling Radio Cherry Bombe in 2014, “The best mentor I’ve ever had is Jeffrey.”

8. He really doesn’t ever cook for Ina. “Jeffrey makes coffee,” she told PEOPLE in 2011. 𠇊s somebody [once] said, smart men need coffee so they all know how to make coffee. And he’s very good at making coffee.” She added, “Jeffrey spends four hours driving back and forth from Yale to East Hampton twice a week. That’s what he does for me. And I cook for him and take care of him. I love to cook for him. He doesn’t have to do anything and that’s my pleasure.”It’s also hard to find something that Jeffrey doesn’t like (though we do recall he wasn’t a big fan of traditional birthday cakes). “I always tell this story,” she said. “One time I made him a cup of tea. And he goes ‘Oh, this is such good tea!’ I was like ‘Jeffrey, it’s hot water and a teabag!’ But because I made it, he enjoyed it. And that’s all I ask for from somebody I cook for.”

9. He’s not Ina’s guinea pig when it comes to new recipes. “I never test a recipe out on him,” she told PEOPLE in 2011. “If I’ve gotten it perfected, I might give it to him to see if he likes it. He’s a bad judge because he likes everything. If I’ve made it, he likes it.” Instead of Jeffrey, who is away working during the week, her business partner Frank Newbold tests out her dishes.

10. He’s aware of his celeb hubby status. Jeffrey told CBS that when he goes to the airport TSA workers say to him, “You know, you get me in real trouble… My wife wants me to be just like you!” But as he said in the Johns Hopkins Magazine interview, his role on the show is organic. “We don’t have any children. I’m her family,” he told 𠇊nd she is all about family cooking. So there never was any contemplation on her part that I wouldn’t be part of this show. That didn’t mean I had to be on every episode, but she had to talk about me and explain that one of her motivations for cooking is her husband. And that had the virtue of being the absolute truth.”

How to Make Cioppino

The broth for this fisherman’s stew is incredibly easy to make, with canned crushed tomatoes, white wine, and seafood stock. I’ve found just one grocery store brand that makes seafood stock, so you could use clam juice, or make homemade seafood stock.

Freshly chopped fennel and dried fennel seeds pair with the garlic and onion to become your Italian-flavor builders.

After simmering the broth, add the seafood, then cover and simmer until the shellfish open. Be sure to toss any unopened clams or mussels.

And there you have it! Dinner is served. Don’t forget the sourdough for dipping, and please, don’t spill on any of your guests.

Ina Garten Explains Why She's Never Had Kids with Her Husband Jeffrey: 'It Was a Choice'

Ina Garten and her husband Jeffrey have one of the most coveted marriages on television. Over the course of 48 years together, they’ve shared laughs, love, and not to mention very good food, but the pair decided early on that they wouldn’t share kids together.

“We decided not to have children,” the Food Network star says in a new episode of the Katie Couric Podcast airing on Thursday. “I really appreciate that other people do and we will always have friends that have children that we are close to but it was a choice I made very early.”

“I really felt, I feel, that I would have never been able to have the life I’ve had,” she continues. “So it’s a choice and that was the choice I made.”

When Couric brought up the stigma that often surrounds married couples who decide not become parents, Garten says she never felt judged for her decision. “I never felt that people did,” she says. “I think the one thing that we miss is a lot of people’s friends are the parents of their kids’ friends. So we never had that connection with other people that I see, that network. But no I never felt judged by it—maybe people did but I didn’t notice.”

The cookbook author met Jeffrey when she was in her teens visiting her brother at Dartmouth College, where Jeffrey was a student. During the podcast—which launched last summer and has gone on to host big names like Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Alec Baldwin—Garten remembers the adorable moment he first laid eyes on her.

“He saw me walking around the campus and he said to his roommate, ‘I wonder who that girl is.’ Now you have to understand Dartmouth was all men at that time so I was like the only girl walking around,” she laughs. “It wasn’t like I was Elle Macpherson walking around Dartmouth and six months later he showed up at my doorstep, which is amazing that he remembered.”

Since their 1968 wedding, Garten says the key to their lasting marriage is respect. “The secret is that you just take care of each other and admire each other and support each other and you get that back,” she says.

Oh, and Jeffrey’s willingness to compromise doesn’t hurt either. “If Jeffrey and I disagree on something,” she says, “he always agrees with me!”

She used to flip houses

Before she broke into cooking, Garten made some extra cash flipping houses in Washington D.C. While her side hustle was lucrative, it was also a difficult one — but not for the reasons you might think. When she would try to get a loan from the bank, she was often given a hard time for being a woman. "I went to the bank to take out a loan and they said 'Well we can't count your salary. We can only count Jeffrey's,'" she told People. "They said, 'Well you're just going to get pregnant and quit.'"

Instead of being discouraged, Garten took matters into her own hands. "I remember going home and tearing up all the credit cards in Jeffrey's name and taking out credit cards in my name," she said. Thankfully, things have changed since then.

10 Little Magic Tricks from Ina Garten

Ina Garten is basically a fairy godmother. She flies through the world, sprinkling bits of wisdom and fleur de sel everywhere she goes. From date-night tips to dinner party advice, Ina is always there to help. And from chocolate cake to lasagna, her recipes are simple and straightforward yet yield the most impressive results. How does she do it? Pure magic.

But that magic can be yours too. Like every generous godmother, she has shared her magic in the form of tips and tricks. Here are 10 to make your life easier, better, and more magical.

1. Create sparkles of romance (without spending a ton of money).

If there’s anyone I trust for advice on keeping the romance alive, it’s Ina. From planning a simple menu (so you can spend less time in the kitchen and more time with your sweetie) to saving the Netflix binge-watching until after dinner, these five date-night-in tips will make your love as strong as Ina & Jeffrey’s — fingers crossed.

2. Bake a party-worthy cake that looks like you waved a magic wand.

This four-layer devil’s food cake with coffee meringue buttercream frosting might seem intimidating, but Ina has a smart tip for making the process more manageable: “I bake the cakes one day and make the buttercream and assemble the cakes the next so it is not too daunting.” See, even the Queen of Entertaining cuts herself some slack!

3. Learn a two-ingredient spell for a perfect easy side dish.

When planning out a dinner menu, all too often the side dish is an afterthought. But Ina has a foolproof way of making the side as appealing the main event: Add lots of Parmesan and breadcrumbs. (Who wouldn’t like that?) This recipe is for roasted zucchini, but you can apply this cheese-and-carb logic to any vegetable — cauliflower, broccoli, and Brussels sprouts included.

4. Transform pork tenderloin from everyday to special occasion with just one ingredient.

If you want to make perfect pork tenderloin, open a bottle of hard cider. (No, not to get drunk on, although a little liquid confidence never hurt.) After marinating the pork overnight in a mixture of cider, maple syrup, and spices, the roasted tenderloin will come out juicy and flavorful every time.

5. Master the practical magic of the tiny hack.

Ina is the queen of the tiny, seemingly inconsequential hack or twist that ultimately makes the final dish so much better. From adding coffee to chocolate (to make it taste more “chocolatey”) to “mashing” guacamole with a sharp knife instead of a fork (to get the best chunky texture), she is a fount of practical nuggets of wisdom.

6. Become the enchantress of make-ahead moments.

If you want to host a dinner party and actually enjoy time with your guests instead of spending the whole evening stressed out in the kitchen, follow Ina’s lead by drawing up a make-ahead menu. From writing out a game plan to prepping most of the dishes a day or two in advance, her foolproof dinner party tips will set you up for success.

7. Turn pumpkins into coaches and raisins into plumped-up paragons of perfection.

If you can’t jet off to Spain to taste tapas first-hand, trust Ina on this stuffed pepper appetizer. It involves steeping raisins in sherry (um, yes please!) and then tossing them with garlic, green olives, anchovies, tomato, saffron, and breadcrumbs to make the filling. You can stuff the peppers and refrigerate them up to a day in advance, so all you have to do is throw them in the oven when you’re ready to have friends over for a Spanish-inspired dinner party. No sweat.

8. Learn the dark art of mashing bananas without mess or waste.

In true Ina fashion, this cake comes with two ingenious tips. First, she suggests mashing the bananas with a fork on a cutting board. Do you know how many times I’ve tried to mash bananas in a bowl and they’ve slipped around everywhere? The flat surface of the cutting board makes it easy to mash the bananas quickly and (relatively) cleanly.

Ina also notes that this cake actually benefits from being made ahead of time: “When you are making a pound cake or banana cake, if you wrap it well and refrigerate it it gets moister. It actually gets better!”

You heard the woman! Bake this cake ahead of time and let it come to room temperature about an hour before you’re ready to serve.

9. Abracadabra your way to the most amazing soup.

It’s no secret that soup is a great make-ahead dish. Ina makes her wild mushroom and farro soup in advance and then reheats it when she’s ready to serve. The one thing she saves for the last minute? Gussying it up! For this particular recipe she likes to add a dollop of crème fraîche and a drizzle of Marsala wine, which sounds absolutely divine.

10. Grace your veggie pasta with a gift.

Adding veggies to lasagna is always a good idea in theory, but certain vegetables can release too much water while the lasagna bakes, leaving you with a soggy mess. Ina’s solution is twofold: Roast the vegetables beforehand and soak the noodles rather than boil them. By soaking the lasagna sheets in super-hot water, you soften them enough to be pliable but also ensure you won’t end up with mushy, overcooked pasta once the final dish comes out of the oven.

These are just a few of the most magical, life-changing moments we’ve learned thanks to our fairy godmother of the kitchen. Do you have any others to add?
